A comment was posted on a news story about an abortion protest (although I use the term "news story" loosely considering the source) and thought it was just so hilarious that I'd share it with you guys.

paul_vincent_zecchino writes:
Here again, as with the article on the gun-grabbers, those who support God's viewpoint on life and therefore oppose abortion, express themselves by presenting truth and God's Word in a logical, reasonable manner.

And those who support abortion express themselves by means of fabrications, dissemblings, manipulations, denials, and insults piously recited in hysterical tones.

As Magnus quite rightly observes, liberals seem to have a gift for, if not hypocrisy, then certainly irony.

By the by, why would the Sovereign of the Universe, whose qualities are love, justice, wisdom, and power, allow this grotesque spectacle of millions butchered by abortion to continue indefinetly?

Doesn't Biblical evidence indicate that no evil continues indefinetly, as in His time the Creator acts decisively to bring it to a crushing, unexpected halt?

I actually had to read that twice because sometimes sarcasm can be too subtle.  Don't worry, though: there's no sarcasm to be found here.  Mr. Zecchino is totally serious.  And this is why religion is funny and why arguing with religious extremists is such an exercise in futility:

If I believe in God and God tells me what's right and wrong, then you're just an asshole and I'll pray for you.  Goodnight.

In the same thread, there was this charming comment:

torah101 writes:
MARK chapt10 ver 19:
"Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus said to him:
"Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments:
★ You shall not murder;
★ You shall not commit adultery;
★ You shall not steal;
★ You shall not bear false witness;
★ You shall not defraud;
★ Honor your father and mother."

"You lack one thing;
★ go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;

★ then come, follow me."

So tell me good honorable christian, the true leader and bearer of the Word of God, what happened to the rest of the 10 commandments, specifically about:

★ other gods, ★ idol worship and the ★ Sabbath?

I really like what torah101 has to say here, although I think it would've been good to stress the fact that the "other gods and idol worship" bit is actually the FIRST commandment.  Which begs the question: what's the point of numbering them if we're just going to ignore it later?  Ah, selective Christianity ... ain't it great?

Again, go back to the first point:

If I believe in God and God tells me what's right and wrong (even though He has a hard time getting it straight Himself), then you're just an asshole and I'll pray for you.  Goodnight.

All I'm saying is this: people are so eager to base their lives on the inaccurate fallacies of Christianity and the Bible--and some go way beyond any semblance of reasonableness--that they actively forsake INTELLIGENCE simply to embrace a less-than-hypothetical concept such as religion.

Exactly what is the human race coming to?

Hi.

So, there's this Catholic priest that I like to pay attention to from time to time. Fr. Michael Pfleger has an interesting response to this debate. He said something like "We will fight to protect the 'right to life' of the unborn but God forbid we defend the right to life of the urban poor. We are allowing the abortions of thousands of 24 year old black men every year."

Now, the racial issues aside, either one is interested in preserving all life or one is not. We cannot pick and choose. This actually allows for some room for abortion to exist.

I think we should have condoms sold in schools, real discussion on sex and pregnancy and systems to help people to actually have a choice. Choose to have sex. Choose to wear a condom. Choose to keep the kid or give it up for adoption. Choose a professional and safe abortion.

I have preferences, but I don't get to tell everyone else what to do. I can only do what I would. People will have sex and get knocked up. People will seek abortions. Let's allow for life to be the theme for all of this, shall we?

The cranks who fixate on one single issue are bent...sadly bent. Thanks for posting this. Keep on keepin' on.

Oh, one last thing: The rest of the verse is about how the rich young man is encouraged to give everything to the poor. If we are to follow Jesus, we need to give everything up. I'm a lousy Christian. I have too much stuff. The verse is not about the commandments being great, but about how they are incomplete. Perfection has to do with caring for the poor above all. Life. See? It's about life for all. Everyone. Not just the unborn.

I find it personally interesting that you lean so heavily on choice. To be clear: I'm not attacking you nor will I ever attack you ... I have far too much respect for you to do that.

I think choice is something that everyone likes to trumpet, but a lot of religious folks tend to go wicked hypocritical on this point. Based on my experience, the typical train of thought is:

"Yes, the right to choose is a God-given right. But, choose wrong and you burn in hell."

What's the point of God giving man free will if you're only allowed to do the things within the constructs of the bible? It's fake free will. It's like Fox News: it's not real, but it wants you to think it is.

Christians will use the bible to rationalize anything--both sides of a given issue. Yes, according to this scripture, gays will burn in hell but in this scripture over here, clearly we're talking figuratively.

At what point does everyone just throw their hands in the air and proclaim that they don't know what they're talking about and that there really are no absolutes and hell, in fact, is an invention designed to effectively eliminate our ability to exercise choice and free will. Yes, I could go take a drive and see Zombieland this Saturday, but I'll probably be violating so many of God's rules (working on the sabbath, idolization, and whatever it is that will condemn the movie for being Satanic) that I would be destined to burn in hell for all eternity, so it would probably just be safer to stay at home and read the bible.

Yes, I COULD go out and see the movie, but if I believe--TRULY BELIEVE--then I don't really have a choice in the matter.

.... I'm bored, can you tell?

Here's a quotation on what's knowable in scripture that I recently found.

"The true system of thought really is the knowledge that humanity is finally directed not toward what it can control in knowledge but toward the absolute mystery as such; that mystery is...the blessed goal of knowledge that comes to itself when it is with the incomprehensible one...In other words, then, the system is the system of what cannot be systematised." - Karl Rahner.

I tagged you on FB as well. I had to post it and send it to some people. The best theological minds of history (Aquinas, Rahner etc) all say something like "We don't know what the fuck we're talking about, but since you asked..."

Augustine, Pope John Paul, you name the thinker and in the end they all say "This is but straw." The fundamentalism that we have today is new. Truly. It's a friggin' aberration in Christian history.

1. The community (or church) preceded the Bible.
2. So, you have to read through the lens of the community, the relationships etc. The Bible is not an instruction book. It is at best a loose collection of stories. No more.
3. Don't get me wrong, the Bible is sacred, but it ain't science. And it ain't perfect like some may suggest.

We all fall short. This "smoke some dope and go to Hell thing" is crap. Maybe we'll all be in Hell before it's all over with. I don't know. But I don't worship a God that refuses to work shit out with me. I worship a God who has been there, done that, bought the tee shirt and just wants me to live life like it mattered to me and everyone around me that I live well.

That's all we have. It's tenuous. But since you asked...

;-)
